Girls:
TEAM CHAMPIONS
Boys:
Runner-up
The Royal Comets competed in Barton Hall on the
campus of Cornell University this past Saturday and came away with a strong team
showing. The girls team showed great balance as they scored in 9 of the
15 events and they didn’t have athletes in two of those events. The leading
scorer was Victoria Shaffer with 11points as she won the high jump and also
earned a 6th place in the long jump. Jaymee Caplan won the 1500m racewalk with a dramatic final 100m that included a dip at the finish line to win by 0:10 and a new season best time of 7:23.00.
Mickey Burke led after the first 200m in the 3200m, pulling away by as much as
six seconds through the first half in which he covered in 4:44, the chase pack
of three which included teammate Nate Kozyra started chipping away at Mickey’s
lead. A runner from Elmira moved past Mickey with 225m remaining,
but didn’t break him. Mickey found another gear and came off the final turn and
passing the Elmira runner just a few meters from the finish line to earn the win
in 9:41.62 which is the leading time in Section V and a state qualifying
performance.
Earning runner-up finishes were Colby Burke 600m
in a new PR of 1:24.24. Tiaja Jeffries broke her PR
twice in the 55m as she went 7.54 in the semi final
and 7.48 in the final. Her previous PR was 7.62. Chauncey
Scissum in the triple jump, Ayanna Sanchez-Jones in the shot put and the boys sprint medley relay of Malcolm
Fowler, Josh Wray, Petey Behnk and Colby Burke.
One school record was broken and Lizzie Greiner
got it. The girls 3000m record had stood since 1997,
Lizzie didn’t just break it, she destroyed it by 17 seconds. Her time of
10:44.64 broke Natalie Collins’s time of 11:01.34
The remainder of the team competed at New York
Chiropractic College. There were several JV winners as Azi
Mustahsan 45m, Tishae
Griffin 1000m and Danielle DeLooze pole vault all
came home victorious. Rachel Yuhas was the lone
varsity winner as she won the pole vault.
Our next meet is Saturday, February 4th at New York
Chiropractic College. This meet will not have any relays and there will be
standards for each event. Everyone that is at least provisional in any event
will be entered in this meet. Beyond those I will have to wait and see what the
standards are and let the team know who’s in.
Thank you and don’t hesitate to contact beforehand
if you have any questions or concerns.
Peace,
